Benthic invertebrates are small organisms that live at the bottom of lakes and rivers. They include animals that spend their whole lives in the water, such as snails, worms, and clams, and insects that spend a part of their lives in the water, like mayflies and dragonflies. Sampling occurs every year in annual water bodies, and every three years in rotational waterbodies.
